Fort Sketch

23Jun11

I went down to the Cambridge Battery this morning to sketch some fun stuff.  It was the first time I have seen the restorations that have kept the forts fenced off for quite a long time. Although they are quite manicured,  the changes seem to make the space much more usable and historically  relevant. The only thing I miss about the old fort was the sense of mystery and foreboding that accompanied the semi demolished, overgrown battery.

This is the location in which Shakespeare by the Sea performs its plays and apparently where it rehearses them too. While I was drawing, people began congregating and warming their voices up through whooping and singing scales.  It took me aback at first, but was interesting to listen to. Actors (and actresses) seem to have a distinct personality and way of talking that must come from being super aware of their voices. I didn’t get a chance to go to any performances last year, but I am going to make sure I go this year. If you have never gone you should make it a priority. They make shakespeare really entertaining and interesting.
